Since much of the McCoy era was obsessed with chess, it might be appropriate to point out that "Silver Nemesis" often feels like you're watching a really slow chess match where no one really captures any pieces but just pushes them randomly around the board until everyone agrees to give up and stop the whole thing. In fact, most of the story's running time involves everyone walking around a lot, trying to get from one setting to another so they can deliver a line of exposition or two and then go somewhere else to stand and wait some more while someone else collects a bow or an arrow or a boombox. But to be fair to the silver giants, everyone in this story is pretty useless. Yes, it's true that the Cybermen are especially useless in this story, spending most of their time either just standing around singly or in groups, or screaming at the very mention of gold (remember, they're supposed to be unemotional). That's right "Remembrance" should have been the anniversary story, but for some reason the number one Who monster lost out, and the number twos stomped in with their ski gloves and moon boots to stake their claim to the historical footnote. It's the official 25th anniversary tale in a year that also featured "Remembrance of the Daleks," an excellent outing for the classic monsters that coincidentally featured an almost identical plot with far better execution and attention to the show's long history. This is one of those stories where received fan wisdom has it that you should think it's really bad. ![]()
